Milwaukee County July home sales increase

The Business Journal of Milwaukee

Home sales in Milwaukee County increased more than 10 percent in July, compared with the same month a year ago, marking the fourth straight month of growth, the Greater Milwaukee Association of Realtors said Monday.

Citing housing statistics released by Metro MLS Inc., the association said July home sales were about 3 percent higher than in July of 2007, when the subprime bubble burst, beginning the recession in real estate.

The increase in sales has been fueled by a marked improvement in affordability in the county as well as the $8,000 home buyer tax credit and low interest rates. Adjoining counties are also seeing sales growth, the association said.

In Milwaukee County, 910 homes were sold in July, compared with 824 in July 2008. Waukesha County recorded 472 home sales, an increase of 15.7 percent over 408 in July 2008, after several months of double-digit decreases in sales.

Washington County went down slightly by 0.7 percent in July, after increasing 12.8 percent in June; and Ozaukee County was down 4.9 percent in July, after showing a 63.9 percent gain in June. Racine County registered its second positive sales month of the year with 1.3 percent. However, Kenosha County came in with a 5.2 percent decrease compared with July 2008.
